Weston Olencki [full]

4 June - Salon de IJzerstaven, Amsterdam
€13.30

Amsterdam-based concert initiative van Horen Zeggen presents: Weston Olencki solo live on modified banjo.

Weston Olencki creates a futuristic, precision-machined form of Americana. A form of the genre that (un)diggs and (un)dusts links and chains between experimental music, traditional music, contemporary audio tech, obsolete audio tech, artificial intelligence, oral knowledge, alternative pasts and alternative futures. They use their music to explore the non-linear relationships and unexpected resonances between experimental sound, geography, historicity, and (mostly American) musical traditions.

Their music has been characterised as ‘…a wild, exhilarating, disturbing picture of our pixelated times…’ by LA times, and ‘…a trombone player with an exceptional feel for extended technique and torrential riffing’ by NY Times.

For van Horen Zeggen, Olencki will perform on banjo, outfitted with solenoid motors, transducers, radio transmitters, handmade electronics, and custom software. All elements (whether field recordings or materials) are sourced directly from the American South where Olencki was raised. As words only can convey so much, please have a listen to Old Time Music (2022) or Pearls Ground Down To Powder (2024) on which Olencki employs their particular electromechanical banjo set-up. Weighted with history and nostalgia, yet ‘hot-rodded’ to futuristic possibilities.

The people at van Horen Zeggen have kindly offered a limited amount of free tickets for Subbacultcha members. Please make a reservation by sending an email to mailinglist@subbacultcha.nl with ‘Weston Olencki ’ in the subject line and your name in the email.
