Glasgow, summer of 1973. Ratcatcher sketches a period in the life of twelve-year-old James. In the slums where he lives, striking garbage men and heapping garbage bags create an increasingly depraved street scene. When he accidentally gets involved in a tragic accident, he doesn’t dare to tell anyone about it and retreats to his own world. Looking for distractions, he dreams of a better existence and seeks connection with different eccentric types in the neighborhood.
This debut film by Lynne Ramsay is made in a documentary-like style: raw images, unsentimental and with a lot of dry humor. The result is a moving and poignant coming-of-age story.
This film is the first part of de Uitkijk’s summer series, in which friendship is central.
