After five years without talking to each other, two old friends – theater director André and writer/actor Wallace – meet in a restaurant on the upper east side, New York.
As simple as the setup is, so rich are the conversations and themes that pass during the evening. Life lessons, anecdotes and philosophical reflections on love, death, career and art, passing back and forth.
In this bold, unique and fascinating film, Wallace Shawn and André Gregory shine as fictionalized versions of themselves. Director Louis Malle accompanied the two actors – and also writers of the film – to eventually put on a carefully staged but fluid masterpiece. The philosophical classic never bores for a moment. Not only are the two men fantastic storytellers, but their friendship also brings a curiosity and generity that elevates their conversation to the kind that you can only have with your best friends.
This film is part of de Uitkijk’s summer series, in which friendship is central.
