Muddy River (1981)

8 July - de Uitkijk, Amsterdam
21:00 - 12,50

A poetic, melancholic narrative about a flourishing friendship between two boys in post-war Japan.

Osaka, 1955. Based on the book of the same name by Ter Miyamoto, this film follows the daily experiences of the nine-year-old Nobuo in post-war Japan. Nuobo is the son of a war veteran who, together with his wife, runs a small restaurant on the right bank of the Tosabori River.

He spends his days in boredom, until one day he discovers that a houseboat has come to the moor on the other side of the river. He meets the people on board – including a boy of the same age named Kiichi, who leads an unknown and adventurous life for him and with whom he develops a special bond.

This film is the first part of de Uitkijk’s summer series, in which friendship is central.
