Invisible Adversaries is not a traditional alien invasion film, but a complex portrait of a woman’s struggle in a world plagued by hostile, ubiquitous forces—whether they are alien or stemming from society itself. This unique avant-garde masterpiece weaves themes such as misogyny, patriarchy and the shadow of Nazism into a poignant feminist psychological narrative.
Anna, a young Vennese photographer, is increasingly convinced that the Hyksos, a group of hostile aliens, are responsible for the increasing decay and violence around her. However, not only the outside world is disrupted, but also her inner world: Anna and her lover try in vain to hold on to their crumbling love relationship. Director and writer Valie Export depicts this psychic fragmentation with an experimental visual style characterized by sharp contrasts: black and white images alternate with color, long cinematic takes are interrupted by violent montages, and still photos flow together with video.
This film is part of THE FUTURE WE LIVE IN series to be seen in March and April at de Uitkijk.
