Expanding the Boundaries: Lecture Series

16 Sep - 23 Sep
Free - Free for members

Two students of KABK (Royal Acadamy of Art), Maddie Swainhart and Sophia Favela, have put together a month-long virtual lecture series. Expanding the Boundaries is an attempt to enable practice and discourse, and the reimagining of space with a value-based order. This *virtual* space is meant to be a safe haven that allows all students to show up, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, listen, feel represented, and wake up.

Speakers such as Sinan Çankaya, Mijke van der Drift, Sioejeng Tsao, Sadika Arab from Collectief S.P.E.A.K., Mandy Harris Williams, Shirin Mirachor, Patricia Kaersenhout, and Greg Newton from BGSQD will take part in the lecture series. They are representative of the cultural agenda that allows the bridging between art & politics and it’s their experiences and words that will help enrich our individual artistic work.

As Maddie and Sophie have described it, Expanding the Boundaries acts as an ode to the students who have experienced less than what they deserve within academic walls.

The overarching themes of the lectures include:

  • Representation and Responsibility (both as makers & as humans)
  • Intersectional Feminism
  • Cultural Bodies and Bodies of Color
  • Inclusivity
  • Anti-Racism
  • Contemporary Black issues
  • Colonialism
  • Queer rights
  • Radicalizing the dominant norm
  • The notion of a safe space

The lecture series will run from the 16th to the 23rd of September. Admission is FREE to ALL and highly encouraged! More information here.
