Unlikely cosmic phenomena – eruptions of supernovaes, disturbances in the position of celestial bodies, meteorites with mysterious inscriptions – coincide with the arrival of the transferred student Izumi.
The girl has a great talent for clean jumping, but a diving accident leaves her changed. When the city sighs under persistent drought and inexplicable things happen, fellow student Mao joins the recovering Izumi, who is now awakened to an elevated consciousness, to seek the source of this cosmic imbalance.
For 117 magical minutes, the film takes you effortlessly into its hallucinatory logic. The images, sounds and textures together feel like a blurred dream in which themes such as love, melancholy and the cosmos become intertwined. From beginning to end, the element of water – and both its presence and absence – is central.
This film is part of the series BODIES OF WATER, to be seen in May and June in De Uitkijk.
