U.s. Girls, Slim Twig + Mark Mcguire

15 August

Attend event:

U.S. Girls + Slim Twig:

U.S. Girls is the lo-fi solo project of Meghan Remy. She buries simple melodies and vocal hooks under layers of (tape)noise and echo. Remy’s expressive singing sounds both stirring and exultant, inspiring chills and smiles in equal measure. Her songs bear the influence of doo-wop, Motown, country, R&B and glamrock. She’s even turned pop classics like Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night” and Brandy & Monica’s “The Boy Is Mine” into basement dirges. For every melodic nugget, there’s a hallucinatory loop, a cloudy drone, or what sounds like the remnants of an exploded pop song– half of a chorus, shards of a hook– echoing in the distance. In lesser hands, alternating experiments and tunes could come off forced or gratuitous, but Remy connects them in a way that sounds natural and almost effortless. During this tour Remy is accompanied by close friend and collaborator Slim Twig.

Mark McGuire:

Mark McGuire is a guitarist you may know from his work in influential, cosmic synth explorers Emeralds. But he has been equally busy as a solo artist as well, releasing a consistent stream of limited edition tapes, singles, and CD-Rs since the mid 2000’s. McGuire’s sound is heavily influenced by European pedal gurus like Robert Fripp (and his collaborations with Brian Eno). He loops and multi-tracks his own playing, creating a rich tapestry of ambient swell and electric noise. There are moments of spacey “kosmische” meditations where single notes are plucked to create a hypnotic effect, but there are also more “proggy” moments with almost percussive notes and dark mechanical noise which bubbles up from underneath.
