Here you will find a few glimpses of joy your Subbacultcha membership had to offer during the past winter months…
We are always on the lookout for the best of the underground in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. In the past months, we’ve enjoyed a plethora of astounding shows with Subbacultcha: it’d be a sin to keep quiet about them. From brain melting concoctions of siren-esque vocals clashed with dissonant harmonies, gritty noise, bold and raw experiments to pop with a decidedly sharp edge, and hazy shoegaze to drift away with… Revisit the Subbacultcha staff picks from winter 2025.
Pop, but decidedly with an edge and twist. At the sold out Concertgebouw, Danish multitalented composer ML Buch cast a spell with her glimmering guitar melodies re-amped through liminal space. Photo by Sabrine Braakman.
Through post-punk, sleazy synths, kraut, pop-y notes and dub, Eat-Girls showed at OCCII why they’re the epitome of the new French cold sounds. This image is photographed by an audience members at the show.
With her siren-esque vocals, voracious energy, dreamy piano ballads sprinkled with dissonant notes and manic screams, the performance of Martha Skye Murphy at de Thomaskerk was utterly captivating. Photo of Martha Skye Murphy by @propellamermaid.
Meticulous soundscapes of Constanza Castagnet, intense electronics of Mai Mai Mai, and gritty punk mayhem of Samuel Kerridge‘s collaborative outfit Death Disco blended into a dissonant ritual at the collaborative night by Strange Therapy and Suburbia at OCCII. Photo by Anni Nöps.
Loom Fest by Subbacultcha x We Are Public was a night still ringing in our ears and eyes, with seven unique performances. Courtney May Robertson kicked off the performance program with her work HUNTER – OFF RECORD!!!, veering off into the world of horror and BDSM. bela’s internal screams and cries, illuminated our own insides, from which Arno Schuitemaker‘s hypnotic performance O S C A R emerged from. Ji Youn Kang constructed a bass-heavy piece, of which we could come down from at Aimée Theriot‘s mesmerizing cosmos. Experimental music darling Klein performed a hybrid DJ/live-set that was out of this world, stepping up the redefining clubmusic in Amsterdam, and YAV closed off the night with an intricate performance, pushing the limits of the body and its voice. Three expertly crafted spatial sound performances were illuminated by the imposing architecture of de Thomaskerk at In:Resonance. Delicate electronics met saxophone in the collaborative performance of Tegnander and Aina Font, Max Frimout‘s modular synths whirled through the space, and Casimir Geelhoed‘s precise composition brought the installation to life. At Garage Noord packed to the brim, Meetsysteem presented his new solo album – a melange of poignant lyrics, catchy rhythms and dreamy synths. Photo of Meetsysteem at Garage Noord by Anni Nöps.
