ArtRocks 2016

It’s come down to the last six for the annual ArtRocks music competition. Over a period of several months, each competing act produced a piece of music inspired by an iconic artwork, which they performed over a couple of museum nights spread throughout November and December. The final showdown takes places in Amsterdam’s Paradiso on Tuesday, 17 January, where the finalists will compete head to head for the grand prize.

The main idea of the ArtRocks 2016 music competition lies within two questions: how does an artwork sound, and can paintings be translated into songs? The answer is yes, they can, which is why we offered local bands the chance to win tickets to five museums of choice, within the Netherlands, back in September. Uniting music and visual arts, ArtRocks challenges musicians to find inspiration from 50 iconic pieces of art, spread throughout the country’s most prominent museums: Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam, Kröller-Müller Museum Otterlo, Drents Museum Assen, Tropenmuseum Amsterdam and Museum Het Valkhof Nijmegen.

Finalists include: Maeve, Pyke, Lisa Nora, FALT, Maaike Adegeest & Seven to Eleven
Special guests: Art Rocks-ambassadrices Cata.Pirata (SKIP&DIE) & Giovanca, Art Rocks winnaar 2014 Bird in a Glasshouse & Heske ten Cate (hoofdredacteur Mister Motley) en Ko van ‘t Hek.
