Somewhere Else

21 June

Somewhere Else is back, taking over Trouw’s DeVerdieping this June with London’s Fatima Al Qadiri, the idiosyncratic Heatsick and Amsterdam’s own Luc Mast & Arif Malawi.

Attend event:

Over the past five years, Kuwaiti-born, New York- and London-based artist Fatima Al Qadiri has developed into one of experimental electronic music’s most globally-minded, nuanced and intriguing characters. Having released two EPs under her own name, 2011’s homage to Muslim music Warn-U as Ayshay and collaborating with Nguzunguzu and J-Cush as Future Brown, she dropped her first full-length, Asiatisch, on Hyperdub in May. You might expect the music of such an overtly politicised artist to be intentionally confrontational or abrasive, but in fact her compositions are minimalist, precise and icily beautiful. As Heatsick, Berlin-based Londoner Stephen Warwick rolls out his dance floor installation, Extended Play, an extended live A/V set featuring specially engineered visuals and decor, lavender scent diffusers, hula hoops, yoga mats and more. Nothing’s complete, though, without our gracious hosts Luc Mast & Arif Malawi, who face the daunting task of melding together sinogrime and idiosyncratic synths.
