While her earliest material was timid and damaged-sounding, born out of a screwed-up relationship and consequent move back home to New Jersey, Sharon van Etten’s foray into music ultimately proved cathartic and inspiring. She’s now based in Brooklyn,and her latest album, Tramp, features collaborations with hot shots like Julianna Barwick and Beirut’s Zach Condon and production by The National’s Aaron Dessner. While she describes songwriting as ‘self-therapy’, she actually finally sounds ready to put up a fight.
