Loom with Odete, Elioa Steffen and Pebblle

29 August - Vondelkerk, Amsterdam
20.00 - €12 - Free for members

Subbacultcha and We Are Public present Loom: a recurring (on- and offline) program that weaves together a multitude of creative disciplines. Theatre, performance art, music, talks, visual arts, DJ sets, you name it.

For this year’s second event, we have invited Odete, Pebblle, Elioa Steffen & Yunie Chae. The edition will be hosted on August 29th in the neo-Gothic Vondelkerk—located in the midst stately houses, overlooking the entrance of the Vondelpark. Odete works between performance, text, visual arts and music. Her work is “obsessed with historiographical writing, using erotics and paranoia as two somatic ways of relating to the archival materials. She writes through her body, speculating biographies of historical characters through epidermic pleasures: fashion, personality, presence, fragrance, grace, sensibility. She claims to be a bastard daughter of Lucifer, descending from the medieval practice of satanic pacts to alter one’s gendered body. Lately she has been researching and working around building connection points between “effeminate histories, from the baroque Castrati to the 19th century dandies.” Elioa Steffen is an artist working in the field of performance. Her work focuses on the intersection of communal narratives, cultural norms, and systemic violence. “With more than 10 years of experience as a facilitator, Elioa creates encounters that explore the relationship between personal needs and shared truths.” Elioa’s work is strongly influenced by queer art lineages and combines critical theory, camp and drag in participatory performances that question the audience’s relationships with each other, power and the state. Pebblle will DJ during the night, for a fun, playful and banging energy. For this edition of Loom, Yunie Chae created the swift and speedy visual outings.

Listen back here to the first episode of Loom talks hosted on Radio TNP where Milla (Pebblle) delves into Odete and Elioa’s performances to get a taste of what’s to come. Listen here.

In 2024, Loom will house 5 events, coinciding with talks, releases and a publication. To wrap it all up, we’ll host ‘Loom XL’ at the bookend of the year. “Ginning, opening, cleaning, combing, drawing, spinning, winding, warping, sizing and beaming.”
