Following strong turns in Nightcrawler and Enemy, Gyllenhaal stars as Davis, a white-collar widower sleepwalking through life following his wife’s abrupt death. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing his most personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amid emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. Through this left-field friendship, Davis starts to put his life back together – by tearing it all apart.
