Devil’s Pie – D’Angelo

16 May - De Balie, Amsterdam
20.30

An intimate, moving and quizzical portrait of one of the most mysterious figures in the contemporary music scene: D’Angelo, who achieved an unrivalled status with albums Brown Sugar (1995) and Voodoo (2000) during the neo-soul movement. Directed by legendary Dutch filmmaker Carine Bijlsma, the documentary was shot during the Black Messiah tour following D’Angelo’s fourteen-year hiatus. A confrontational series of interviews with Questlove, Pino Palladino, Alan Leeds (former tour manager of Prince and James Brown) and never before seen archive material delve into the wreckage of emotional and spiritual crisis in the years leading up to his disappearance from the public limelight.
