default den haag is happy to announce the opening event of their new season – returning to The Grey Space in the Middle on Wednesday, 21st of October with works by Clara Levy & Victor Guaita Igual, Raviv Ganchrow and Lauren Tosswill.

‘Songs of Erosion’ is an ongoing project by Clara Levy (Violin) and Victor Guaita Igual (Viola) that offers a contemporary reinterpretation of Cantigas de Santa María, revisiting the 13th-century Spanish songbook through the lens of erosion. By treating the manuscript as an archaeological artifact, the duo develop their own set of instructions to tackle the expansive collection, inspired by geological processes. Their performance comes after their recent release on Discreet Editions, on which they articulated two Cantigas through concepts of sedimentation and landslide.
Raviv Ganchrow’s ‘Songing Thalassic’ provides an occasion to delve into various iterations of hearing whale songs – opening geological dimensions of vocalization as well as links to 1970s environmentalism, Cold War ocean surveillance, and emerging interspecies cultural imaginations – questioning what hearing whale ‘songs’ actually involves? The presentation follows the recent completion of the first-ever documented recording of a whale song in the Strait of Magellan, conducted in the framework of ‘Whale Refractions’ research.
Lauren Tosswill is a sound artist and performer who uses language, voice, and objects as a means to complicate and undermine comprehension, construct absurdity, and engage in live, relational exchange with collaborators and the audience. Tosswill will be bringing her salient approach to sound performance to The Hague on her first European tour, presenting ‘Scores for Wednesday Evening for Men’s Ensemble Choir’, in which she will conduct a (locally sourced) choir of eight men hidden in a room adjacent to the stage.
More information about the program can be found through default’s focus newsletter.
Following a quieter year, this event marks the return of default’s regular programming in The Hague, with more events to be announced soon for the October 2026–June 2027 period.
