Premiere: Victim Victim – Self Service

We’ve been craving for some more Victim Victim after being floored by the energetic performance in Westerliefde last January. Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer for our fix, as Subbacultcha is proud to announce the premiere of the new Victim Victim EP Self Service.

Self Service continues to expand upon her no-fucks-to-give attitude and even with a moniker like Victim Victim, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one track here that renounces itself to a wave of melancholy. Instead, VV uses our insecurities and re-appropriates them as a powerful sonic weapon. Vulnerability connects us all, these tracks seem to declare, which often cascade between feelings of empowerment and isolation. Lead single SMBFD for example, uses the process of loneliness as a backdrop from which sharp, layered synths that harken back to the heyday of the 90s rave scene. Meanwhile, Kill U slows things down and allows for Aafke Kloppenburg’s ice-cold vocals to effortlessly glide alongside a deep, sombre drum groove. No matter the pace though, VV never truly stays quiet. The sound is crisp, but the lack of polish helps distance from the trap of superficiality pop music often falls in. Instead, VV presents a selection of tracks which appear genuine and human, reminding us that within the chaos of our everyday life, sometimes we just need a little fun. Without further do, please enjoy Self Service.

Come dance at De School when Victim Victim play together with Porches on Tuesday, 17 May.
