Can you picture a face, not the way it looks in a single moment, but the way it looks as it flows in time and movement? Founded in 2007 in Japan, artist duo Nerhol problematizes the traditional photographic portrait, a medium in which three-dimensional subjects are presented on a flat plane. A collaboration between graphic designer Yoshihisa Tanaka (1980) and the sculptor Ryuta Iida (1981), Nerhol brings back some of the complexity lost in two-dimensional portraits by combining photographic and sculptural techniques. Their time-lapse portraits are products of a three minute period in which the portrayed subject is captured in his or her every movement. The images thus generated are converted into one multi-layered, dynamic sculptural portrait, which offers a honest ‘index’ of the portrait and the process of making.
