Twin Shadow – Confess

Twin Shadow – Confess (4AD)

New wave revivalist George Lewis Jr, aka Twin Shadow, broke hearts with his remarkable 2010 debut, Forget, then broke some more hearts and filled up dancefloors touring the world with a full band in support of it. According to Lewis, Confess was inspired by the time he crashed his motorcycle with a friend on the back. ‘I remember in that moment I wanted to say everything to him,’ he writes breathlessly. ‘How could I say everything in a split second? How could I bury my words in his heart?’ While his new material is indeed often touchingly confessional, in addition to being considerably more up-tempo and danceable than his early work, it lacks the intimacy that made Forget unforgettable, and his would-be James Dean posturing comes off as overly affected to me.
