Our Monthly Top 05 – May 2012

01. Song: Chromatics – Into The Black
It sure takes guts to start your record with a Neil Young cover, ’cause who carries the tunes better than the old master, right? Well, Chromatics pull it off in style. Their subdued version of ‘Into the Black’ sends shivers down our spines every time we play it. (Video)

02. Concert: Odonis Odonis @ OT301
A Subbacultcha! show the way it’s supposed to be: loads of people coming out to see a band they’ve never heard of and being overwhelmed by a furiously entertaining live set. Great band, great night. More of that, please.

03. Music: Doldrums
Doldrums is the real deal. No run-of-the-mill one-trick pony blog hype but a soulful, adventurous musician who released one of the most challenging EPs of 2011. Don’t miss his show in amsterdam on May 20. (free download)

04. New Hotspot: Schenk Studio
We spent a week over at the Schenk Studio, recording some music and enjoying the weather on the supposedly dangerous wharf just oustside the studio. We had a great view of het IJ while eating courgette pasta with lots of garlic, lemon and chilli pepper. Living the life. (website)

05. Guilty Pleasure: Elton John – Tiny Dancer
Okay okay, it’s time to admit it. We got drunk one night in a hotel room in Brighton. We started downloading. first Neil Young… then down to John denver… on to James Taylor… and the last thing we remember is ‘elton John – “Tiny dancer”: download complete.’
