Richard Dawson

11 May

Richard Dawson – not the late host of Family Feud – is a Newcastle musician whose relationship to his native folk tradition has more in common with Broadcast, even Throbbing Gristle, than Nick Drake. This is twisted folk whose regard for musical history is as affectionate as it is brutal, and it sounds terrific. Laura Hill, aka Scraps, is a Brisbane songwriter using synthpop building blocks for intimate self-portraits.

Richard Dawson – not the late host of Family Feud – is a Newcastle musician whose relationship to his native folk tradition has more in common with Broadcast, even Throbbing Gristle, than Nick Drake. His latest is full of heart-rending acapellas about formative childhood memories (birth, trips to the museum and executed horses). But elsewhere Dawson carves strum-jams of Captain Beefheart-ish discord out of guitars that sound as pained as he does mid-howl. This is twisted folk whose regard for musical history is as affectionate as it is brutal, and it sounds terrific.

Brisbane’s Laura Hill, aka Scraps, melds ’80s synth-pop juggernauts with eerie experimentalism for gently unfolding, intimate vignettes.
