For the second chapter of The Art Department’s residency program, we asked artist duo Otto Kaan to move into our office basement. Inspired by the design and story of the Fiat Panda, they plan on constructing cars out of found rocks.
Otto Kaan consists of Berend Otto (1985) and Guus Kaandorp (1986). Together they share a history of building all kinds of objects, varying from conceptual photographic tools to scaffoldings and furniture, which they often document in excellent photographs.
Their residency at The Art Department will be all about the Fiat Panda and its Italian designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro. In preparation for the project, Otto Kaan set out on a journey to Geressio, birthplace of Giugiaro, where they indulged in the story of the Fiat Panda and collected rocks, ideas and images.
Their first event is scheduled on 5 June and is aptly titled YOUNG, after a special edition of the Fiat Panda. Visitors are invited to step right back into childhood ecstasy and build a huge toy race circuit.
The work process of our residents is documented on Tumblr, publications are made available here. For more information, please visit www.subbacultcha.nl or follow The Art Department on Facebook. Questions and interview or image requests can be directed to theartdepartment@subbacultcha.com.
