SOVT is a piece by Sarah Hennies for prepared piano, whose strings are muted by poster putty. SOVT, or “Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract,” are also a series of vocal exercises that Hennies encountered during a course for voice feminization. During one of the exercises, one sings through a straw to regulate air pressure and strengthen the voice. In SOVT, the piece, Hennies summons vibrations similar to sensations in mouth and throat by singing through a straw. Its restrained strings and rhythmic passages result in a distinct body of sound; in something that exists between piano and percussion.
Sarah Hennies is a composer whose work concerns musical, sociopolitical, and psychological issues as queer & trans identity, psycho-acoustics, and social and neurological conditions underlying creative thought. SOVT was recorded and will be performed by richi valitutto; pianist, chamber musician, vocal accompanist, founding member of the ensemble Wild Up and Julius Eastman scholar.
