Fhloston Paradigm is only one moniker of Philadelphia native King James Britt; you’d need more than a cursory glance to take him in. Starting in the early 1990s he’s steadily released ambitious slabs of funk, jazz and hip hop – until finding a welcoming home at Hyperdub as Fhloston Paradigm. First produced during the Ferguson protests in 2014 as a performance for Black Lives Matter, To Unprotect and Subserve is an intensely emotive, often disorientating passage which (re)processes the police brutality against African-Americans.
