Proponent of the endurance of the American Dream, songwriter Juan Wauters has a narrative fit for fiction. Father Alberto Wauters left homeland Uruguay in 2000, moving into a Queens basement to make a living. Two years later, he called on his son to join him to pool savings through factory work to bring their family north. Already having discovered musics capacity to translate his feelings as a child in Montevideo, Uruguay, Juan turned to strumming and wailing charmingly imperfect folk to expel and articulate his severe sense of isolation. A decade later it’s clear that Wauters has wholeheartedly embraced his adopted hometown, which likewise has popularised his songwriting as frontman of garage outfit the Beets. Striking out on his own, Juan released his debut solo record N.A.P. North-American Poetry on Captured Tracks in 2014 and followed up Who Me? this year. Both releases are filled with introspective tracks that are presented in Wauters’ slightly goofy folk and sound like New York’s answer to Daniel Johnston. Supporting Juan this time around are Rotterdam newcomers Venus Tropicaux.
