Coincidentally or not, a great many of the artists initially tagged as chillwave such as Toro y Moi, Ducktails and Washed Out, have ended up following a similar trajectory away from the use of hazy soundscapes and buried vocals towards more traditional pop song structures. Oxford native Hugo Manuel’s work as Chad Valley is no exception, since his new full-length debut, Young Hunger, shows that he too had a hankering for something more substantial than the Balearic bliss of his early EPs.
