Birds Nest: Djuwa Mroivili, Rachael Lavelle, Charlotte Jacobs and more

22 March - Cloud Nine, Club Nine at Tivoli, Utrecht
€19

Birds of Paradise presents: Bird’s Nest, an evening for discovering new music, emerging artists and unique collaborations. On two stages at Tivoli, you can hear six artists whose careers are taking off quickly: Rachael Lavelle whose vocals channel Kate Bush; boundary pushing piano compositions of Djuwa Mroivili, shiningly soft pop of Charlotte Jacobs, experimental folk of Merope and more.

Djuwa Mroivili (NL)

Pianist Djuwa Mroivili is an original in the world of classical music. Djuwa investigates how she can challenge the traditional (cis, hetero, eurocentric) norms and dominant hierarchies in the classical music tradition and embrace an authentic story. In her performance I Vow To Distract Forever you hear Djuwa in all her diversity: as a theatre personality, show performer and of course pianist/composer of quiet piano music to rousing beats.

Charlotte Jacobs (BE)

The Belgian Jacobs lives and works in New York and recently released her debut album Atlas on the famous New Amsterdam Records: the label that also has Grammy winner Arooj Aftab in its stable. Together with drummer Raf Vertessen she plays her album, with references to Beth Gibbons, Meredith Monk and Cinematic Orchestra. Or as the Volkskrant stated: “Jacobs makes sound sculptures of harmonic mists rather than pop songs. But they always have a caressingly soft aesthetic”.

Rachael Lavelle (IRL)

Rachael Lavelle’s debut album Big Dreams was released in November: full of atmospheric vocals that glide over undulating electronics and somber, brooding horns. Fans of Lankum or Kate Bush will feel right at home with it. She wrote the album over a period of 10 years, during which she refined her craft as a composer, had various side jobs and also played the opening act on Lankum’s tour. Lavelle has been nominated for the Choice Music Prize Ireland and was named One To Watch by The Guardian.

Merope (BE)

Merope is the duo of singer and kanklės player Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė and Belgian multi-instrumentalist Bert Cools. Their music has its roots in the old folk music of Lithuania, but with Cools’ wide-ranging guitars and electronics, something magical happens. This magic is more present than ever on Vėjula, their latest, most experimental album to date. The album also features collaborations with like-minded artists such as Shahzad Ismaily, Laraaji and Bill Frisell.
