Interview

Fuck Buttons

Take the first time you ever fell in love, add some cotton candy and a unicorn and you have Fuck Buttons. Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power make the kind of music that has neurons firing in those parts of the brain that are particularly ticklish. We talked to the guys on Skype about the sound of fruit and the joys of a Sunday roast

How are you guys?

Good! We’ve just been in the studio all day, working on our new album. We’ve been doing so for the last few months now. It’s been different from our previous albums, which were both recorded in the same space in a blocked-out period of time. This time we’ve taken a lot longer to come up with ideas and work with different people in different places. But the studio we’re working in right now is below my house, which is great. It used to be a practise space, but we made it into a studio. We don’t have to share it with other people, which is great as well.

Where would you say the best things happen, live or in the studio?

Both really, it’s all connected to each other. What we do on stage feeds into what we do in the studio. When we’re writing, we also do it with a live setting in mind. And when we play live we try out new things to see what works, and get new ideas from that as well.

What does a normal day for you look like?

Uhm…

Let’s say yesterday.

Well, yesterday was Sunday, that makes it a bit different. I didn’t do anything really. We ate a brisket.

Yum. Did you go out at all, last weekend?

I don’t party that much nowadays. I used to, though. Besides, there’s the feeling we’ll embark pretty soon, with this new album and all, so we’re really trying to be home as much as possible.

What’s your favourite sound?

When you put a strawberry on the floor and firmly step on it while wearing shoes. It’s a great mushy sound. Also if you drop a watermelon from a certain height. We love all sorts of fruit sounds, there’s even some on the new album.

Sounds amazing. When will we be able to hear that stuff?

We don’t know yet, but keep your eyes peeled.
