To warm up for the Friday night of Rotterdam’s Motel Mozaïque festival, which sets a beefy lineup of concerts, visual art, dance and theatre over various indoor venues, Subbacultcha! and Motel Mozaïque are teaming up to curate a stage of bands for a free day party in Schouwberg square. Rotterdam duo Victim Victim dub themselves ‘lava wave’, which could refer to the way their southern hip-hop-ish bass creeps along ominously underneath their Grimes-ish vocals. Beyond that, the band’s mystique remains under their propensity for dry ice and lack of information. The Sweet Release of Death, presented together with Popunie, make noise pop with plenty of ’90s rock flavours as building blocks. Think Pavement with a new wave sheen. Herrek draws from a childhood spent in Papua to paint slightly menacing shades of acoustica, built on with otherworldly samples and a distinctively harrowed voice.
