Minimal Music Festival: KKAARREENNIINNAA

16 April - Bimhuis, Amsterdam
20.30-22.00 - 12,50-25

Minimal Music Festival presents a double bill by avant-gardist Charlemagne Palestine, sound artist and guitarist Oren Ambarchi and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan together with Japanese organist FUJI|||||||||||TA for an immersive listening ritual of electroacoustic soundscapes.

A concert is *also* a ritual, and that certainly applies to this jam-packed double bill. With his stuffed animals and colorful scarves, Charlemagne Palestine is the high priest of ritualistic minimalism. Together with two sound artists of a younger generation, guitarist Oren Ambarchi and multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan, Palestine forges a new version of his meditative classic *Karenina* tonight. Their performance is preceded by a set by Japanese sound artist FUJI|||||||||||TA, who brews subtle, hyper-intense soundscapes with his voice and self-built pump organ.

Composer, performer, and visual artist Charlemagne Palestine, an exponent of the New York experimental school, originally created Karenina (1997) as a solo work for Indian harmonium and vocals. It is colorful drone music in which his fascination with Indian improvisation and spiritual synagogue chants resonates. In this new version by a super trio, Karenina promises to be a dynamic and transformative listening experience once again.
