Central Let x U? x Subbacultcha

19 March - Centraal Museum, Utrecht
€11 - Free for members

During Centraal Laat, a different cultural organisation from Utrecht takes over the museum for one evening each year and creates a one-off event that ties in with the current exhibition.

During this collaborative show, we’ll delve deeper into the world of Tarot and rituals this evening. You’ll have the opportunity to view and experience the exhibition Shertise Salano – Move You Fool. Enjoy performances and workshops, and delve deeper into the theme of Tarot through a reading by Sjoeke-Marije. Experience spirituality through live music and art, and discover how Utrecht-based artists are putting their own spin on themes from the exhibition.

Maguette Dieng presents s(a)(e)cre(d)(t) wisdom

A listening session inspired by Senegalese divination traditions, which utilize systems such as cowrie shell reading. These ancestral divination methods—passed down through generations—remain vibrant and influential spiritual practices on the African continent to this day. They offer a means of finding clarity, direction, and protection: a way to explore the future and unfold the present.

Beauty Trials

Beauty Trials is an experiment in spiritual disillusionment. They demonstrate a multifaceted, ambient approach to tarot resonances. The ensemble consists of current students Sam Zwart and Sam O’Connell, along with alumna Carmela Michailidis of the HKU Utrecht Conservatory. Beauty Trials originated within the Musician 3.0 department—a place where they further developed their improvisation skills and blossomed as interdisciplinary performance makers. Their sound blends ambient, experimental jazz, and shoegaze, moving between texture and space, structure and spontaneity.

Sjoeke Marije

Sjoeke-Marije Wallendal is a theatre maker, body-oriented therapist, and tarot reader. As a director, she creates work that engages the audience and engages all the senses. She has performed at Tryater, Calefax, Tresonanz, and her own company, Maria Guerrera, among others. Experience—the physical and emotional experience of something—is a common thread in her work. For 20 years, Sjoeke-Marije has used tarot cards as a valuable tool for gaining insight into herself and others. She sees the Major Arcana, the first 22 cards, as a cycle through which you travel several times throughout your life.

In this lecture, she discusses the meaning and symbolism of the tarot cards and shows how to read and interpret them.
