Full disclosure: our Mandarin is rusty, we are animate mammals, and our bowels are all too functional. Testament, then, to the transcendent nature of sweet, sweet music is our love for this wistful new I Can’t Shit Because I’m a Tree. demo, which channels the Rotterdam-based songwriter’s native Taiwan lyrically and has us all pensive and sentimental despite its brevity. Citing the Pixies (i.e. the guys we sourced this very publication’s name from), emo progenitors Cap’n Jazz and all post-2000 folk-punk as primary influences, the Tree (aka Henry Sung) has a rising and entirely deserved local reputation built on a fearless live presence, brutally honest, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and, duh, his affecting homespun tunes. Stay tuned for more – he has an EP in the works and we can’t wait for it to take root in our heads and hearts.
