The LA scene revolving around Ariel Pink churns out the kind of music you might expect of a place that’s as suffused with irony and weed smoke as it is with sunshine and smog. Nite Jewel’s Ramona Gonzalez, as well as her husband and bandmate (and Haunted Graffiti member) Cole M Greif-Neill, can be counted among its key members. Gonzalez’s early work fell in line with Pink’s warped, AM radio funk aesthetic, and could justly be described as ‘dance music you can’t actually dance to’. However, she’s a sonic chameleon, always adapting to her changing surroundings, and while her latest album, One Second of Love, retains the slinky retro vibes of yore, it also finds her moving in a cleaner-sounding and poppier direction.
