Rarely has a name been so apt. With a magician’s touch, South Africa’s John Wizards seamlessly blend the warmth of traditional afro-pop genres like township soul, funk, mbaqanga and shangaan with contemporary electronic, synth-pop and hip hop elements into eclectic bursts of euphoria. Bursts because the tracks on John Wizards’ lauded self-titled Planet Mu debut, an album that will undoubtedly grace top 10 lists come the end of the year, refuse to be bound by conventional structure. Instead they cheerily skitter across the map, guided by John Withers’ relentlessly upbeat sonic explorations and Rwandan vocalist Emmanuel Nzaramba’s auto-tuned incantations. If there’s one new act that will clear out the cobwebs and lift you from your fall fallow, let it be John Wizards. Support on the night is from Hofstad upstart FilosofischeStilte. Barely 19 years old, he’s already released two EPs, a beat tape and played high profile stages like Pitch Festival. With a repetoire comprised of atmospheric hip hop, ‘future trill’, trap and more, young Luuk Graham adds to John Wizards diverse blend of genres.
