Cass McCombs – Big Wheel and Others (Domino)
This Northern California songwriter has developed a reputation for being forthcoming and emotive in his lyrics and defensively private in person. This odd mix of rebelliousness and confessionalism has helped the enigmatic vagabond build a cult following over his decade-long career. Following his two acclaimed 2011 albums, Wit’s End and Humor Risk, McCombs returns with Big Wheel and Others. His most stylistically diverse and ambitious release yet, it plays like a soundtrack to a road trip across the American landscape, with McCombs collecting tales of religious doubt, sociopolitical tension, and romance as he travels between rock ’n’ roll, blues, jazz, and folk. The journey is a bit overly long, but nevertheless landmarked with some of his finest work yet.
