The New Pornographers – Brill Bruisers

The New Pornographers -Brill Bruisers (Matador)

The New Pornographers were my first ever ‘indie’ concert. A flatmate of mine had randomly invited me to go, and I went having never heard their music. Since I’m here now, still obsessed with indie, still obsessed with them, you could guess they made a good first impression. Over their 17-year existence, the Canadian supergroup, featuring Destroyer’s Dan Bejar and Neko Case, has released some of the catchiest and cleverest indie pop around. Their sixth album takes its name from Manhattan’s Brill Building, where a community of songwriters wrote many of the ’60s’ greatest pop songs. Sounding nothing like a collection of oldies, Brill Bruisers rather takes the nimbleness of those classic hits and bulks it up enough to knock out even the most complacent of modern-day music listener.
