Adult Jazz – Gist Is

Adult Jazz – Gist Is (Spare Thought)

I rarely experience love at first listen, but I did with Adult Jazz. The Leeds-based art-rockers seem to have appeared out of nowhere, but in reality they laboured over the songs on this debut for four years, self-recording them at a friend’s farmhouse in Scotland before mixing and releasing the album themselves. The isolated space and the deliberate pace turned out to be perfect for nurturing their sound into something wholly unique, a playfully experimental take on pop that assimilates bits of prog, folk and electronic music with a knack for calculated risk-taking that recalls bands like Dirty Projectors and Wild Beasts. An excellent debut and probably one of the best albums of this year, Gist Is will remain a beautiful, complex, inviolable thing regardless of where Adult Jazz go from here.
