Heavenly Beat – Prominence

Heavenly Beat – Prominence (Captured Tracks)

John Peña played bass in Beach Fossils before leaving the band to focus full time on his rather different solo project, Heavenly Beat. His debut album, Talent, flew under many a radar when Captured Tracks released it back in 2012, but the feather-light and impressively consistent dream pop it contained left those who did detect it hungry for more. Inspired by a breakup and the vibe of Primitive Radio Gods’ ‘Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand’, Peña’s elegant new album flaunts his increasingly refined gift for crafting danceable and distinctive melodies, skillful arrangements and honest but understated approach to confessional lyricism. Much as its predecessor lived up to the promise of its title, Prominence is outstanding and should succeed in generating the attention Peña deserves.
