In Through a Glass Darkly, a family vacations on the remote island of Fårö. Their already fragile bond is tested when daughter Karin (a superb performance by Harriet Andersson) discovers that her father is exploiting her schizophrenia for his own literary novel. The father (Gunnar Björnstrand), Karin’s husband (Max von Sydow), and her younger brother (Lars Passgård) are powerless to prevent Karin from descending deeper into the abyss of mental illness.
