Quilt

5 April

Sonic seamsters Quilt stitch together a patchwork of suddenly shifting tempos and moods into a varied but cohesive whole. Add Amber Arcades’ ‘folkgaze’ for some dreamy gauze over those seams.

Note: Not that you needed an extra reason to go see Quilt’s show at De Nieuwe Anita on 5 April, but know that those who buy a ticket at the door will receive an April Subbacultcha! pass, no questions asked, no strings attached. So bring along that stubborn friend of yours who isn’t ready to sign up yet and they’ll get a taste of Subbacultcha!.

The members of psych folk trio Quilt met and formed the band while they were all studying visual arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. After a couple years of gradually developing their signature ‘60s-loving sound, the outfit put out their 2011 self-titled debut, on which they stitched together a patchwork of suddenly shifting tempos and moods into a varied but cohesive whole. For its follow-up, the sonic seamsters had the luxury of spending a full month in the studio with neo-psych production wizard Jarvis Taveniere. The resulting album, Held in Splendor, showcases a Quilt that’s been gently hand washed, brightened up and expanded with a few new patches, namely bass, saxophone, violin, cello, and steel guitar, one that sounds more colourfully kaleidoscopic and dazzling than ever.

Amber Arcades is the pseudonym for Anneloite de Graaf, Utrecht-based frontwoman of Oh, Brave Wide Eyes. She calls her music ‘folkgaze’. which is to say it does dreamy from singer-songwriter angles as much as with spaced out guitar textures.
