This film is a part of De Uitkijk’s winter series, which focuses on loneliness, while offering warmth and company at the cinema.
Bill lives an apparently ordinary life. Yet the lonely protagonist struggles with a lingering fear of death. When Bill is confronted with a genetic mental disorder, his fear draws ever closer. As the condition gradually takes over, we follow a path of fragmented memories and kaleidoscopic dreams. In these three merged short animated films by Don Hertzfeldt, we witness the life and thoughts of Bill.
This animated film could hardly be simpler. Bill is a stick figure moving through an empty world, accompanied by film projections, simple visual effects, and a graceful soundtrack. Yet Hertzfeldt manages to create a stunning, deeply moving meditation on life and death. Every viewer can relate to Bill and his fears, and is inspired to embrace life as fully as possible.
