Requiem for a Dream (2000), directed by Darren Aronofsky, is a psychological drama film depicting four parallel individualsburdened by their different forms of drug addiction, whether it be heroine, cocaine or amphetamine in the form of diet pills. Set in New York’s Brooklyn, the protagonist, Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) finances his heroine addiction through small-scale thefts and spends his free time with his girlfriend Marion and best friend Tyrone, who are no less addicts than Harry. Meanwhile, Harry’s widowed mother spends lonely days admiring and obsessing over the glamorous life portrayed on television, leading her into a cycle of amphetamine-based diet pills. The climax of the film ain’t pretty, but something we can all learn a valuable lesson from; drugs are bad.
