Kabareh Cheikhats

8 February - Garage Noord
19:30 - €12 - Free for members

From the heart of Casablanca, Kabareh Cheikhats are bringing the heat to Garage Noord, celebrating their cultural heritage and challenging masculine norms, by embodying the roles of women. Their performance explores the feminine aspects in themselves while paying tribute to the shaykhāt (iconic female entertainers) who traditionally used it to expose and denounce prejudice, inequality and injustice in a provocative yet sensual symphony.

Their voices on the radio were seen as bearers of news, transmitting strong messages across the country. Facing stigma, Kabareh Cheikhats echo the fearless women’s mission to shake up the patriarchy by questioning the gender binary and raising awareness about the daily oppression faced by women and queers. As performing can impose risks, they label their act as “theatre” to preserve artistic freedom. They will start the night with a dance workshop, home-cooked Moroccan couscous and tea on donation basis. They’ll perform again later in the evening, supported by multidisciplinary artist Thawra (live) who experiments with rap and drill, ending the night with baby ganoush b2b ZOBAYDA, all similarly use their artistry as a form of healing.

Beyond visual aesthetics, the joyful and vibrant act is a transformative internal exploration, that challenges Western views on Moroccan culture and counters negative stereotypes of North African and Arab men. They shout for equality and liberation, valuing the power of the voice above the clarity of the tone.

Additionally there will be a fundraiser for Gaza, providing vital resources like eSIMs and tents. Get ready for an unforgettable night, where traditional meets experimental.
