Naming your alter-ego after Jesus Christ and the French writer Emile Zola and saying ‘everything you were before birth’ is your main influence might get you labelled a weird duck. As a kid, Russian-American Nika Roza Danilova was fixated on becoming an opera singer. Luckily for us, she chose a different path. Boy, every time we hear ‘Avalanche’, we still get the chills. Now her fifth studio album, Taiga, is out, named after the Russian word for boreal forests. Again, it’s filled with lovely dark synth pop, albeit more poppy than before.
