Ty Segall – Sleeper (Drag City)
After he released three terrific albums in 2012 alone, many wondered if this garage rock demigod ever sleeps, but aside from starting the new proto-metal band Fuzz he’s had an uncharacteristically quiet year. After 10 excruciating months he finally awakes from his musical snooze with his latest solo album, Sleeper. Unlike his previous work, it was recorded over the span of several months in various locations, reflecting instability in Segall’s personal life: he lost his dad to cancer late last year, relocated to LA to be closer to his little sister, then had a falling out with his mother. Perhaps more relevant to the non-emotionally invested listener, it’s also almost entirely acoustic. Before you cry out ‘Judas!’, rest assured: although he’s best known for pouring grit into your ears, Sleeper proves that this sonic sandman can bring you sweet dreams even when stripped of his usual safety blanket of distortion.
