A seven-hour performance, recorded by dozens of cameras and then endlessly repeated, to mercilessly expose an arbitrary system that attempts to silence any critical voice. This is Trial about Fake, a documentary project by the Brussels filmmaker Manu Riche and the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. As Ai Weiwei is China’s most renowned artist, his critical voice is more often than not silenced. On charges of tax evasion, he was put behind bars for months. After a show trial lasting one day, he was ordered to pay a heavy fine. Reason enough for Manu Riche to reconstruct this trial, making it into a documentary project.
