Xiu Xiu

18 May

The brain-child of San Jose experimentalist Jamie Stewart, Xiu Xiu have managed over their twelve-year career both to maintain a legendary standard of avant-garde brutality and a devoted following. So it’s a testament to both the continuing indie sensibility and unflinching gruesomeness of Stewart that their new music is simultaneously razor sharp and moreish as ever.

The brain-child of San Jose experimentalist Jamie Stewart (sometimes literally), Xiu Xiu have managed over their twelve-year career both to maintain a legendary standard of avant-garde brutality and a devoted following. This was probably because a penchant for the abject – we’re talking grossness at visual, lyrical and sonic levels – usually came with rapid, paralyzing synth punches and anguished vocal delivery by Stewart himself that often bordered on the impassioned indie rock of bands like Wolf Parade and Shearwater (who, incidentally, covered his own ‘I Love The Valley OH!’). So it’s a testament to both the continuing indie sensibility and unflinching gruesomeness of Stewart that new record Angel Guts: Red Classroom is simultaneously razor sharp and moreish as ever.
