Attend event:

Subbacultcha! and Meduse MagiQ present Bright Lights, Big City in collaboration with the Melkweg. This will be an evening to showcase the Amsterdam that lies beneath the surface. We escape the fast lane and explore the rougher edges of the city, revealing a multifaceted international community of budding artists and musicians. From Amos Mulder’s found footage compilations and Naive Set’s jangling guitar pop to Mühr’s droning metal and Hugo Rocci’s playful animations, Bright Lights, Big City is a cross-section of Amsterdam’s unflinching and unwavering output of creative energy.

On 2 April, twelve of Amsterdam’s talents – some homegrown, others recent arrivals – take to two Melkweg stages to present their corner of the city. Musically, there’s the Subroutine-nurtured garage pop pairing of Apneu and Naive Set, Meduse MagiQ’s Bird on the Wire, Blue Crime, local metal heads Mühr and the American-born Fetter, the distinctly Scandinavian Klarälven, NON Records’ cosmic wanderer Marius. Complimenting the oratory array are four equally contrasting visual artists: French animator Hugo Rocci and upstairs in the world of Meduse MagiQ you will find analogue romantic Meeus van Dis, Amos Mulder and Lilian Stolk.

Bright lights, Big City is organized in collaboration with Meduse MagiQ, a music label based in Amsterdam. MQ is a community for musicians by musicians. Artists are invited to play and collaborate on MagiQ nights with concerts, exhibitions and performances.

Bright lights, Big City is part of The Future Is Not What It Used To Be, a three-day, interdisciplinary conference on new cultural strategies featuring workshops and think tanks that examine the prospects of cultural organizations in an ever-changing European society. The conference takes place from 2 to 4 April at Melkweg (Amsterdam) and P60 (Amstelveen) and is organised in co-operation with Trans Europe Halles, the European network of indepenendent cultural centres.
