For the new Cool Japan exhibition “What A Genderful World” Melkweg and Tropenmuseum show a series of anime films with strong female lead roles. The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya by Studio Ghibli’s Isao Takahata is an animated interpretation of the 10th-century Japanese fairy tale ‘Taketori monogatari’, one of the oldest Japanese texts. An old man finds a baby in a radiant bamboo plant. The young girl, blessed with exceptional beauty, later turns out to be an alien princess.
