The Fall Issue of the Subbacultcha quarterly magazine is out now
Once again, Le Guess Who?, the annual and most exciting festival in Utrecht, is back to entertain our autumn days. That means that its off-shoot Le Mini Who? is also ready to kick off with its 2017 edition. A day’s worth of festival calls us to a treasure hunt around the city centre, transforming restaurants and shops into great venues for discovering new and long-time friends within the underground music scene. Here are the names for this year’s edition, picked by yours truly:
You may or may not have caught them in our magazine’s latest issue; Fela Gucci and Desire Marea are a duo you shouldn’t miss live. FAKA is a multi-media project mixing music, fashion, photography, writing, and much more striving to make a positive change in South Africa and defend black queer culture. We promise you a show that’ll blow you away. Using gqom -the bass-heavy South-African genre – in combination with their performance on stage, FAKA are a unique piece of art you should add to your discoveries.
WORLD BRAIN is a mysterious new entry we want to get to know better. What’s the sound of the solo project of Fenster’s French guitar hero master named Lucas? Guess we’ll have to hear it for the first time with our own ears.
Elias El Gersma comes live with his solo project and new EP1, out on Purple Noise Records. Armed only with his cool keyboard, the talented kid from Friesland is ready to grab our attention with his dreamy and spacey sounds. EP1’s songs are the perfect tone-setter for sweeping through the various locations of Le Mini Who? later in the day.
Last but not least, we’ve lined up our dear friend Karel Hendriks, aka Karel. His pop sounds are sure to make us dance and embrace life’s vitality. We can’t control the weather, but this guy will light up the room with the sole power of sound and motion.
